The City of Carefree

pic1.jpg (42695 bytes)

The Sonoran Desert and the unique mountain terrain in the Desert Foothills area are what attract most visitors. There are plenty of fun, interesting, and historical "diversions" to check out while in Cave Creek, Carefree, and surrounding locations.

Everything from the "Old West" to modern works of architecture can be found within a short driving distance.  Founded in the 1950's, the town is one of the earliest planned communities in Arizona. We also boast one of the largest sundials in the Western Hemisphere. Carefree has gained a reputation for its beauty -- the unique rock outcroppings and boulders visible for miles -- its nationally-known residents and visitors and our shopping and recreational amenities. The art galleries, cultural events, unique shops and restaurants attest to our fine reputation.

The famous giant sundial has been attracting people to Carefree since 1959. It is the third largest working sundial in the Western hemisphere. Located in Sundial Circle, this ancient time telling instrument measures 90 feet in diameter. The sundial is made from a steel frame and covered in anodized copper. The metal gnomon, or shadow casting portion of the dial, stands 35 feet above the plaza and extends 72 feet. A sunburst of colored glass hanging from the gnomon completes the sundial.

Carefree and Cave Creek residents pride themselves on offering a diversity of cultural interests and activities in the area -- everything from pops concerts and jazz to painting and theater.

Shopping in Carefree and Cave Creek attracts not only the casual browser, but also the serious collector.  You can find anything from spurs to crafts and custom jewelry by local artists.  Here you will find fascinating galleries and shops to explore. Spend hours strolling through studios, trading posts, shops, clothing boutiques, crystal shops and more. Stop and enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants in town. Then stroll some more!  There are several weekends throughout the year that feature festivals of juried fine art and wine.
